The Best Electric Shaver for Sensitive Skin

For years having sensitive skin meant avoiding electric shavers because of the irritation and poor shave that was delivered. We took a look at the electric shavers currently on the market to see if any of them could deliver a high-quality shave, even for those who struggle with sensitive skin.

We did not include any cheap or budget choices on this list because while the shaving performance can be respectable, they usually require you to go over the same areas multiple times which is the primary cause of skin irritation. If you are avoiding an electric shaver because of an experience with an old or cheap electric shaver, these picks may offer a completely different experience.

How We Chose

While we considered the same factors we used to determine our picks for the best electric shavers, we put more emphasis on the shaving comfort factor when making our picks for sensitive skin.

Shaving Performance

While we always recommend shaving with a dry face to get the closest shave, we only considered shavers that can be used dry or wet with shaving cream/gel. While many shavers are capable of being used in wet conditions, not all are designed to be used with shaving cream. Shavers that are not designed to be used with shaving cream can quickly get clogged up and provide a poor shave.

Our choices are all able to be used with shaving cream and deliver a good shave whether they are used on dry skin or in the shower. All of our choices also ensure that the shaving head stays cool during use. As the shaving head heats up it can cause increased friction with the skin making it both difficult get a good shave and cause rashes or irritation.

Shaving Comfort

Except for the Philips Norelco Shaver 9000 Prestige, no rotary shaver has offered nearly as comfortable shave as what foil shavers provide. You will notice that all of our choices are foil shavers for this reason.

The foils protect the cutting elements and glide over the skin compared to the rotary shavers that can feel like they are pulling hairs before cutting them. Braun’s Series 5, Series 7, and Series 9 all include a SkinGuard in the shaving head that we believe helps the shaver glide over the skin more comfortably than competing models.

While we recommend nearly everyone to choose an electric shaver with a cleaning station, we believe this is particularly important for those with sensitive skin. Ensuring the shaver is clean and lubricated ensures that you will maximize the performance of the shaver and reduce the number of times you have to shave over the same areas. The cleaning solutions include alcohol in them which kills bacteria to reduce the risk of breakouts or bumps.

Features & Accessories

Braun Electric Razor for Men, Series 9 9370cc Electric Shaver With Precision Trimmer, Rechargeable, Wet & Dry Foil Shaver, Clean & Charge Station & Travel Case

While all of our choices include multiple models within the shaver families, we choose the model we believe offers the best value for features and accessories. Models that include cleaning stations are often not much more expensive than those without them and we recommend choosing a model that includes the station.

Several shavers offer automatic or manual adjustment of shaving speeds based on your comfort or beard length. While we don’t believe this results in a better shave, it can provide you the option to use a slower speed in sensitive areas which can result in a more comfortable experience.

Accessories vary by model but most high-end models include a travel case and built-in trimmer or attachable trimming head to allow you to clean up around the neck and sideburn areas.

Battery Life

All of our choices include a battery life that is 50 minutes or longer. This is the standard among most shavers these days and it offers enough time to go on a short trip without having to recharge. While you cannot use any of these shavers while they are plugged in, a quick charge option is provided that allows you to quickly charge enough for one shave.

Our Picks

Top Pick for Sensitive Skin

Braun Electric Razor for Men, Series 9 9370cc Electric Shaver With Precision Trimmer, Rechargeable, Wet & Dry Foil Shaver, Clean & Charge Station & Travel Case

Braun Series 9 (9370cc)
$224.94
The Braun Series 9 delivers the best shaving performance and comfort of any electric shaver we have reviewed.

Prices as off 2020-12-05 at 03:20 / Contains affiliate links.

Pros
  • Wet, Dry, or with Shaving Cream/Gel
  • Gentle on the Face
  • Excellent Shaving Performance
  • Clean & Charge Station Dries Shaver
  • No Problem Shaving 2-3 Day Stubble
Cons
  • Price

Why we chose it

Not only does the Braun Series 9 provide the best shave of any electric shavers we have reviewed, but it was also the most comfortable shaver we have ever used.

The Series 9 offers everything we consider to be important for shaving with sensitive skin. Of any shaver we have reviewed the Series 9 shaved best while using shaving cream. Some shavers tend to push the cream or gel around the face or get clogged up. The Series 9 felt as if it was gliding over the face and the shave was still excellent.

Shaving Performance

The Series 9 has 4 cutting elements and a shaving head that pivots in 10 directions. This allows the shaving head to pick up hair falling in multiple directions and contour to the face. Additionally, the shaver has what Braun calls “SyncroSonic” technology. What this means is the shaving head vibrates 10,000 vibrations per second which help pick up hair off the face and into the foils.

The combination of vibrations and flexibility reduces the number of times you have to shave over the same areas. The Series 9 shaved the most hair in the first pass than any other shaver we have used.

If you shave less frequently to reduce irritation, we were able to shave two or three days of stubble with no trouble using the Series 9.

Shaving Comfort

The Series 9 can adjust the power based on the density of the beard. What this allows the shaver to do is increase power when it is cutting through a thicker area and slightly less power when cutting around sensitive areas like the neck.

We were impressed with how the foils stayed cool against the face throughout the entire shave. Many shaving heads on budget shavers end up heating up during your shave resulting in discomfort and irritation that cannot be avoided.

Features & Accessories

Braun Electric Razor for Men, Series 9 9370cc Electric Shaver With Precision Trimmer, Rechargeable, Wet & Dry Foil Shaver, Clean & Charge Station & Travel Case

The Series 9 is Braun’s top of the line shaver and it has all of the features you would expect from an electric shaver. There is a built-in battery LED indicator and a well-designed head lock that allows you to lock the positioning when shaving difficult areas.

Unlike most cleaning stations, the Series 9 station also dries the shaver after the cleaning cycle. If you have ever put a wet shaver against dry skin you will appreciate ensuring that the shaver is dry and clean for every shave.

Recommendation

Simply put, the Braun Series 9 provides the best shave, most versatility, and best meets our criteria for what you should look for if you have sensitive skin.

Pros
  • Excellent Shaving Performance
  • Comfortable Shave
  • Shaving Foils Stay Cool
  • Trimmer & Travel Case
Cons
  • Older Design
  • Clean & Charge Station Does Not Dry Shaver
  • Only Some Models Can Be Used with Shaving Cream

Why we chose it

While the Series 9 is the provides the best shave and features, the Braun Series 7 doesn’t trail far behind. You can get most of the shaving performance and features with a slightly lower price point if you are willing to make a few compromises.

Only some models of the Series 7 can be used with shaving cream or in wet conditions. The model we chose (Series 7 7865cc) can be used in wet environments or with shaving cream.

Shaving Performance

The Series 7 shaving head uses 3 cutting elements instead of the 4 included on the Series 9. The Series 7 also pivots in 8 directions vs the 10 directions the Series 9 pivots. In practice, we have found that the resulting shave is nearly the same but the Series 9 tends to be slightly quicker and require fewer passes than the Series 7.

While this model of the Series 7 can be used with shaving cream, it sometimes feels like it is pushing the shaving cream around requiring you to rinse the shaver off more often. Despite this, we still felt like we got a good shave when using it in wet conditions and would still recommend it.

Shaving Comfort

For years the Series 7 was the best electric shaver when it came to shaving comfort. It has only been surpassed by the Series 9 but we wouldn’t hesitate to still recommend the Series 7 to most people. The Series 7 may take slightly longer to complete a shave but we didn’t notice any problems with the shaving foils getting hot or uncomfortable.

Features & Accessories

Braun Electric Razor for Men, Series 7 7865cc Electric Shaver With Precision Trimmer, Rechargeable, Wet & Dry Foil Shaver, Clean & Charge Station & Travel Case

The Series 7 includes most of the same features and accessories as the Series 9. The clean and charge station does not have drying but most of the other included accessories are the same. You can manually adjust the speed on the Series 7 vs the automatic speed adjustments on the Series 9. This can be nice to slow down the speed around the neck and jawline areas.

Recommendation

If the Series 9 is out of your budget, the Series 7 should still provide a comfortable and close shave without the discomfort that can come from cheaper shavers. The balance of price, features, and shaving performance is why the Series 7 is our favorite electric shaver.

The Closest Shave

Panasonic Arc5 Electric Razor for Men, 5 Blades Shaver and Trimmer, shave sensor Technology, Automatic Clean and Charge Station, Wet Dry, ES-LV95-S

Panasonic Arc5 (ES-LV95-S)
$149.99
The closest shave of any electric shaver we have used but shaving comfort is good but not great.

Prices as off 2020-12-05 at 03:20 / Contains affiliate links.

Pros
  • Closest Shave
  • Fast Shave
  • Easier to Clean Manually
Cons
  • Bulky Shaving Head
  • Shaving Comfort Not as Good As Braun Shavers

Why we chose it

Our last choice for those with sensitive skin is the Panasonic Arc5. This shaver offers the closest shave and good performance in wet or dry conditions. However, the shaving head is awkward and may require multiple passes over the same areas.

Panasonic Arc5 Shaving Head
Bulky shaving head on the Panasonic Arc5

Shaving Performance

The performance of the Arc5 cannot be disputed. We received just as close of a shave with the Arc5 as with the Series 9, but where the Arc5 struggled was the shaving experience.

The shaving head on the Arc5 is substantially larger than the head on the Series 9 or Series 7 and makes it difficult to shave around the neck area.

Shaving Comfort

Unlike the Series 9 or Series 7, the Arc5 does not include a skin guard element in their shaving head and at some points you feel the shaver dragging over your skin resulting in a burning feeling or irritation.

The Arc5 can be used with shaving cream and that helps improve the comfort of the shave. Unfortunately, you will not be able to get the closest shave when using shaving cream which negates the biggest advantage the Arc5 had over our other choices.

Features & Accessories

Like the Series 9, the Arc5 can adjust the speed based on the density of the beard that it is shaving. Unfortunately, this feature does not work very well when using shaving cream but it doesn’t affect the performance or comfort of the shave.

The Panasonic Arc5 model we recommend includes a travel case and cleaning station that operates in a similar way to the Braun models. Compared to the Braun models, the Panasonic Arc5 is easier to clean manually if you choose a model that does not have a cleaning station.

Recommendation

As with all Panasonic shavers we have reviewed, the ease of use tends to be the weakest point. Performance is excellent, comfort is great, but it can be difficult to manage the bulky shaving head to not have to go over the same areas repeatedly.

If you are willing to trade off some comfort and must have the closest shave than the Panasonic Arc5 is the choice for you.

Shaving Tips for Sensitive Skin

Optimal Shaving Technique

If you are coming from a razor and using your first electric shaver you may not be familiar with the correct way to shave with an electric shaver. Here are 3 quick tips to help you use the correct technique.

  1. Use short strokes against the direction the hair grows.
  2. The shaver should be positioned at a 90-degree angle to the skin.
  3. Use your free hand to stretch the skin as you pass the shaver over the area.
  4. Adjust pressure depending on the area you are shaving.

Shaving Frequency

Finding the right balance on how often to use your shaver is directly related to the thickness of your beard and your desired shave. Shaving with an electric shaver can take multiple weeks for your skin to get adjusted to the foils passing over the skin.

During this time you may get some discomfort that prevents you from shaving every day. If you are experiencing any discomfort consider trying to use your electric shaver with shaving cream or shaving every other day until your skin becomes adjusted to the shaver.

Keep Your Shaver Clean & Lubricated

The performance of your shaver is directly impacted by the cleanliness and maintenance of the shaving head. If you don’t clean or lubricate the cutting blades they can become clogged and the performance of the shaver will suffer greatly. This will cause you to have to repeat going over the same areas potentially causing razor burn or irritation.

Replace the Shaving Head on Schedule

While electric shavers are designed to be used for 5 years or more, the shaving heads are designed to be replaced every 12 – 18 months. This is highly dependent on how often you are using the shaver and if you are maintaining the shaving heads in-between replacement.

This is extremely important if you have sensitive skin as having sharp cutting blades will make a cleaner cut through the hairs and require you to make fewer passes over the same area. If you have found that your current shaver is performing worse than when you purchased it, check and see if it is time to replace the shaving head.
