When most people think of an electric shaver, one of the first products that come to mind is a Braun shaver. While Braun started with just one model in 1950, today they have multiple series, models, and accessories that can make choosing a Braun shaver difficult.
Despite the explosion in models, Braun’s shaver range includes models that will fit in everyones budget. You may have to make tradeoffs in shave quality, or shaving speed but we will help you make an informed decision.
Most people find themselves deciding between the Series 7 or Series 9 at the top end, or the Series 3 or Series 5 in the budget end. We are going to break down those two comparisons and help you choose the best electric shaver for you.
One important thing to keep in mind is that the accessories that Braun includes with models in the different product lines will vary. The most important difference between models within a Series is if they include a Clean & Charge station.
Fortunately, you can easily identify if a model includes a Clean & Charge station. If the model number ends with a “cc” it will include the Clean & Charge station. If the model ends with a “s” it will not include the cleaning station.
Braun Series 7 vs Series 9
Released in 2015, the Series 9 includes all of Braun’s most innovative features and technologies. Braun took many of the elements that made the Series 7 our top shaver and improved them where possible. The Series 9 adds another cutting element and more power making the shaver more effective at cutting through longer stubble and requiring fewer passes over the same area.
The shaving performance for the Series 9 and the Series 7 is excellent. The Series 9 uses a 4 cutting element shaving head compared to the 3 cutting element shaving head that is included on the Series 7. In addition to the increased cutting element, the Series 9 is also slightly more powerful.
All models of the Series 9 and most models of the Series 7 support wet or dry shaving. This allows you to shave in the shower or with shaving gel if you would prefer. We have found that shaving with a dry face results in the best shave.
Braun claims that the Series 9 is able to cut through three days of growth without issue, and we would agree. If you tend to let your beard grow for a couple of days before shaving, we would recommend the Series 9.
We have found that the quality and the comfort of the shave is comparable but the Series 9 has a slight speed advantage due to the increased power and extra cutting element. This allows the Series 9 to perform better than the Series 7 on denser stubble.
In addition to the increased performance, we have also found the Series 9 to provide a slightly more comfortable shave. This is impressive considering the Series 7 already provided one of the more comfortable shaving experiences on the market.
If have have sensitive skin you should also consider the Series 9, as the comfort is the best we have experienced with any electric shavers.
Features and Accessories
Many of the included accessories and features are shared between the two product ranges, but the one main difference lies in the Clean and Charge station. The Clean and Charge station included with the Series 7 provides only cleans and charges, while the Series 9 station cleans, charges, and dries your shaver. Both the Series 7 and Series 9 include a built in trimmer to clean up sideburns or other areas.
If you are looking for 95% of the performance at a lower price, the Series 7 will still provide an excellent shave and is very comfortable. The Series 7 is our recommendation for best electric shaver due to the mix of shave quality, features and price.
If the Series 9 is in your budget, we would highly recommend it as an upgrade from the Series 7. If you have sensitive skin, go multiple days without shaving, or prefer the modern design you will appreciate the improvements the Series 9 includes. The Clean & Charge station included on the Series 9 includes the drying feature which is a nice addition.
Braun Series 3 vs Series 5
If the Series 7 or Series 9 is out of your price range, Braun offers a number of shavers that offer many of the features from the higher end models while offering a similar shaving experience. Keep in mind that none of the models from the Series 3 or Series 5 will be able to match the shaving performance of higher end models.
Despite their limitations, both model lines provide an excellent entry point to electric shavers and most people will be satisfied with their performance.
Both the Series 3 and Series 5 utilize a 3 cutting element foil system with very similar designs. The biggest difference between the Series 3 and Series 5 is the amount of movement the shaving heads can provide.
The Series 3 only allows the cutting elements built into the head to move while the entire shaving head and the cutting elements can move on the Series 5. The extra movement that the Series 5 provides allows for a better shaving result and experience compared to the Series 3.
Due to the lack of movement you may find yourself going over the same area multiple times with the Series 3 to shave hairs laying in different directions. We have found that the neck and jawline provide the most difficulty when using the Series 3.
Most models in the Series 3 and Series 5 line are wet & dry capable, but we have found that electric shavers provide the best shave with dry skin.
Features and Accessories
While the shaving performance is different across Braun’s electric shaver lines, the features and accessories they offer for their high end shavers are nearly identical to those offered on the Series 3 and Series 5. Built in trimmers or trimmer attachments are on all models to allow for trimming of sideburns and Clean & Charge stations are available with some models as well.
When making the decision between the Series 3 or Series 5 you have to decide which side of your budget you are looking to stay on. As Braun has introduced more models of electric shavers, the price between their different Series shavers has become closer and closer.
The Series 3 serves the exact purpose it was designed for and we would recommend this shaver if your budget is under $100. It provides an excellent entry point if you are looking for your first electric shaver or have a thin beard beard.
If you have a coarse beard, prefer to shave every couple days, or are looking for a closer shave, the Series 5 is a solid choice. We would highly recommend checking the price difference between the Series 5 and Series 7 as the gap has been closing during the last few years.
The Series 7 is our favorite electric shaver and is worth stepping up to in order to get a better shave quality than the Series 5 will provide. If the price difference remains an obstacle, consider choosing a Series 7 model without a clean and charge station. The additional work to clean the shaver manually will be worth the improved shave quality.
For the best shaving performance, we would recommend either the Series 7 or Series 9 shavers. If either of those shavers is above your budget, the Series 3 offers the best performance of any budget shaver we have reviewed. While the Series 5 provides a good shaving experience, we feel the price is close enough to the Series 7 that you should consider upgrading to the Series 7 if possible.
